Arrests in Khartoum

In Oktober and November of 2010 the Sudan National Security arrested 13 Darfurian human rights activists and journalists in Khartoum. The Security Services raided the offices of the Human Rights and Advocay Network (HAND). After the release of 11 Human Rights activists and Journalists, four were rearrested on the 11th of February 2011. Currently six Journalists and Human Rights activists are still detained.

 

Several human rights groups shared the office of HAND. One of the arrestees was the human rights activist Abdelrahman Adam (35), who allegedly collaborates with Radio Dabanga and HAND and is still detained.

Another detaine is a journalist of the Al Sahafa daily newspaper: Gafar Elsabki Ibrahim Abu (37). He was arrested by the Sudanese National Security. He was taken from the newspaper’s premises on Wednesday afternoon. The paper’s editor in chief, Alnur Ahmed Alnur, confirmed the arrest to Radio Dabanga. He said Elsabki is an editor from the town of Um Kedada in Darfur.

The US State department condemned the arrest as did the UNAMID peacekeeping mission in Darfur. International human rights organizations made calls for "action" to put pressure on the government to release the detainees.
