Young girl raped by gunman in Zalingei, Central Darfur
An unknown gunman raped a young girl from El-Hamidiya IDP camp in Zalingei, Central Darfur on Wednesday August 22. A relative of the girl told Radio Dabanga that an armed man attacked the girl and her mother around 4 pm on Wednesday August 22 at approximately 1 kilometer from the camp.
They were attacked on their way back to the camp from collecting wood. The relative added that the gunman hit the girl's mother with his rifle until she lost consciousness. He then took the child in the direction of Wadi Azoum and she was released on Thursday August 23.
Traces of abuse and torture were found on the girl's body. A Zalingei camps coordinator told Radio Dabanga that UNAMID took the girl to the International Medical Corps center (IMC) for treatment, however IMC representatives informed UNAMID they were not authorized to treat rape victims, according to the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) law.
The hybrid mission decided to take the girl to Zalingei hospital. At the hospital UNAMID was asked to provide form 8, which requires registering a report with the police. On their turn, the police claimed not to have authority to register rape reports.
