UN reports indicate that the entire population of Kassab IDP camp in North Darfur has fled as a result of the recent fighting. There were more than 25,000 IDPs in Kassab camp.
The fighting erupted after a district chief, Abdelrahman Mohammed Eissa, was shot dead in Kutum during a carjacking attempt.
Eissa's tribesmen retaliated by killing two displaced persons and a police officer. In addition, houses of IDPs, markets and businesses in the Kassab IDP camp and town of Kutum were looted.
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) initially expelled the tribesmen from the camp on Saturday, but they returned on Sunday and engaged SAF in force.
