Camps reject food- and aid distribution transfer to State institution

Displaced camp residents say the move would lead to 'new himanitarian catatrophe'

The displaced people in North Darfur camps rejected the initiative transfering the aid-and food ration distribution from the World Food Program to the State’s Chamber of Commerce. They stated that this transfer process, which is currently under way, would, if completed, lead to a new humanitarian catastrophe. The coordinator of  North Darfur Camps, Omda Ahmed Atem, said in an interview with Radio Dabanga that he called on the World Food Program to renege on the decision, explaining that the Chamber of Commerce is part of the Government’s strategy to use food as a weapon. He added that food distribution through traders might be a suitable system in some countries where governments aim to help their people, but that it can’t be applied to Sudan, where the government is carrying out genocide against its own population.
